Great Baltimore Fire of 1904

The Baltimore Sun’s Jacques Kelly speaks more on the fire that ravaged and destroyed parts of downtown Baltimore. According to the Fire Museum of Baltimore, some 1,231 and 1,200 National Guardsmen were needed as part of the effort. In about 30 hours, 140 acres of downtown Baltimore had burned, taking down 1,526 buildings and 2,500 businesses in its fury.

Deportation Nation Project Launched

I launched the Deportation Nation project my colleague and co-producer Renee Feltz. It’s the home of an independent investigative reporting project that critically examines the increase in detention of innocent and low-level immigrant offenders as a result of enforcement programs mandated to target “dangerous criminal aliens” called Secure Communities. It features original reporting, infographics, video, audio, and time lines. Thanks to Asif Baksh for his continued technical assistance and support.

Meet Juan Crow Launched

Here’s an investigative, multimedia project that explores Arizona’s voter law, which requires voter applicants to prove citizenship. It was the only state to do so.  At the time, at least 19 other states have considered similar requirements.

I produced this with Renee Feltz as part of a News21 fellowship with Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Business of Detention Launched

The Business of Detention investigates the profitable business of immigration detention by documenting the rise of industry leader Corrections Corporation of America. The site includes original reporting, articles, interactive graphics, infographics, videos and exclusive interviews.

The project is the first investigative-new media project for the University that emphasizes investigative work in a web savvy way. It won the Melvin Mencher Award for Superior Reporting and the James L. Wechsler Award for National Reporting. It also won nominations and was recognized by the Webbys and SXSW Interactive.

Co-produced with my colleague Renee Feltz.

Meet Brooklyn Brewery’s Steve Hindy

Featured on the May 2008 “I AM NY” web issue of NYCinteractive.org, I worked on a multimedia project that focused on Brooklyn Brewery’s co-founder Steve Hindy – a former Middle East correspondent with an interesting past and a leap of faith in the beer industry. It was co-produced with Jami Makan, who worked on some crazy flash graphics. Here are some of the videos I produced  – Part1, Part2, and Part3. My husband, Sean Crowley, provided some original tunes.

Patriotic Nookie: As American As Apple Pie

Featured in the April 2008 The Dirt” web issue of NYCinteractive.org, this project re-enforces the idea that that there is no shortage of political sex scandals in America. We dove into topic head first, producing a dirty timeline of America’s most infamous scandals and spoke with Queerty’s Andrew Belonsky on why we love them so much. Co-produced with Radha Vij and Jaclyn Trop. Do check out the hilarious video I produced of our interview with Belonsky
